Clouds gather
\ndarkness
\ninto themselves,<\/p>\n

Through air\u2019s hidden water
\nmy breathing struggles<\/p>\n

Rattling leaves
\ninstruments of ancient dance
\nforetell intensity.<\/p>\n

Across lake
\nLightning punctuates sky,
\nthen
\nopaque darkness.<\/p>\n

By water\u2019s edge
\nI brace:<\/p>\n

What if I
\ncopy John Muir,
\nclimb the tallest sentinel,
\nthrow out my arms
\nmerge with wildness?<\/p>\n

he fled toward storms
\nand lived
\nfearlessly solo
\ndaring life to intervene.
\nHe
\nsaved Yosemite
\n(it would have been a dam)<\/p>\n

But<\/p>\n

someone died from lightning
\njust yesterday,
\nthe second this week.<\/p>\n

Energy thrums<\/p>\n

Loving the excitement of storm,
\nI tense but thrill<\/p>\n

Flash\u2026 pause\u2026 Roar!
\nthirty seconds and closer<\/p>\n

What if I run
\nto the camper,
\nSafety on tires?<\/p>\n

I crave storm\u2019s
\nElectric aliveness —
\nTo retreat seems tame<\/p>\n

Flash! Roar!
\nfragmented seconds<\/p>\n

I tremble<\/p>\n

Crack! Smell! Tingle!
\nRun!<\/p>\n

Slam the door<\/p>\n

Contain my
\nStorm-power worship
\nto indoors and my trembling dog,
\ndevotee of safety,
\nas rain
\nbecomes the
\nPoem!<\/p>\n
